Run All Night (2015)

Also known as “Taken 17”. Yes, Liam Neeson is back as the guy with a particular set of skills and despite the actor’s hatred toward firearms he sure seemed to enjoy using them throughout the film. The movie is good, it has a lot of good action scenes in it, but honestly I think Neeson has poisoned the well with me. He’s too political and his movies are all the same (even though the formula works and probably makes money). Ed Harris was an awesome villain and honestly at times, I wanted him to succeed in his efforts. I’ll probably confuse this one for a Taken film in the future, so at least I’ll have this review as a reference to remind myself that it was a little different.

Trumbo (2015)

No this isn’t about an elephant that can fly… it’s about a blacklisted Hollywood writer in the 40’s. This is an interesting movie to watch today, considering Hollywood is conjuring up their own red scare. I wonder when they made this movie, if they knew they would look foolish just a year later shouting that Russian’s were around every corner? Still, if Communism is your thing, go for it… it’s a free country. I’ll feel free to ignore you as it is your right to ignore me. I thought Trumbo was an interesting character and I loved hearing about the different movies he was involved in. He was both very likable and unlikable at the same time. Bryan Cranston did a great justice for this character with some excellent acting. I was also happy to see a well rounded cast. The movie is pretty long, and sometimes felt that way, but for the most part I found it to be quite enjoyable. I didn’t like the witch hunt that was happening to those writers then and I don’t like them today either. I probably won’t watch this again, but I do have a hankering to watch Sparticus and Roman Holiday.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013)

They weren’t kidding in the title when they said this was long. Nelson Mandela is a good and important man in history. It’s a shame a film about his life was so drawn out and boring. I was also confused why they had to show so many Mandela love-making scenes. Maybe it’s important to some, I guess? Still, I love Idris Elba as an actor and he did a very good job as Mandela. The sets and costumes and the massive amount of extras was pretty amazing too. I just wish there was some better pacing issues fixed before the film was released.

V for Vendetta

Vivid and vicious violence. A cool action hero with a lot of mystery and charm. This movie has all the makings to be incredible but then politics get in the way. The first time I watched this it didn’t bother me as much. Then I watched it this time and noticed how ham-handed and obvious some of the political messaging is in this film. This movie is REALLY good, sadly I hate getting pulled out of this cool world when the director’s personal political points poison the film. Despite that, it’s great.

Iron Sky

A wonderfully campy movie about Nazi’s hiding a base on the dark side of the moon. The cast did a fantastic job, the visuals were really quite stunning and the crazy campyness had no end with a female president that I guess was supposed to be Sarah Palin and she apparently has a hot evil campaign manager. All the jokes seemed to be aimed at conservatives but I wasn’t offended. I thought that Julia Dietze played an excellent German beauty, even though she was born in France. Great fun!
