Slow West (2015)

They were heading west… and it was slow. The really slow people involved in this film were the writers. What the heck was that ending? I’m now going to refer this movie as “Cuckold West”. Wow… that ending. Even though this movie is quite short compared to every movie out there, it felt long and had zero payoff. The acting was good, and there were some endearing moments but that ending will forever mar this film into suckiness. This is another one of those films where I will curse it on my deathbed. Why, why couldn’t I get that time back? I’ll always like Michael Fassbender though. He is just an excellent actor. I hope to never see this again, or even see it sitting on a store shelf. I’m done with it!

Steve Jobs (2015)

It’s starting to become a full-time job keeping up with the multitude of Steve Jobs movies coming out. Will it ever stop? iCan only hope. I have nothing against the man, but I’m not a huge Apple person. After seeing this movie, I don’t think it did any favors for the memory of Steve Jobs as he looks like a colossal jerk. The writing by Aaron Sorkin is incredible though and the main reason the movie got such a high mark from me. The directing from Danny Boyle was really good too. Michael Fassbender was really good and so was the supporting cast. I just sat through my second Steve Jobs movie in so many years and I just wonder why? The film is also a little formulaic as it’s talking, talking and talking (Sorkin’s forte) and then a product reveal. Rinse and repeat. That was the Steve Jobs movie. Let’s just hope this satiates the fans long enough to give me half a decade before the next adaptation. Is iPod the movie next? iWonder…

Frank (2014)

He’ll never be the head of a major corporation but being a band lead singer is good too. This movie about the mysterious Frank who wears a giant fake head is pretty interesting. Funny at times, a little sad at times too. One of my favorite lines was something like “I’d really like to know what’s going on inside that head, inside that head”. The music in the film is really strange, but kind of cool. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a few logs short of a log cabin. I love the part where she stabs someone. Even though you can’t see his face, Michael Fassbender does a great job and Domhnall Gleeson keeps proving to be a star. This is a good movie, albeit weird. Frank could be an iconic character someday in the history of movies. Let’s just hope he doesn’t get too big of a head over it.

12 Years a Slave (2013)

For a movie clocking over two hours long, it didn’t feel like it went on for 12 years to me as an audience member. The movie was quite captivating at times and extremely hard to watch. Steve McQueens direction was superb and Chiwetel Ejiofor was fantastic in the lead role. I would say that this may be one of the best films out there that deals with the subject of Slavery. The problem is, I watch movies for entertainment and not a message… and by now most people know that slavery is horrendous and it shouldn’t be done… message received. So, if you need reminding on how bad it all went and how bad the perpetrators were… this is a gem of a film. If you want  solid non-cringeworthy entertainment, try something else.

The Counselor (2013)

The writer, Cormac McCarthy, might need some counseling of his own. This movie was just a little too weird for my tastes. First, it has way too much philosophizing in it. Enough to start getting on my nerves. It also has a pretty terrible ending. Plus what the heck is up with Cameron Diaz in this? She takes a huge step from her roles in Something About Mary and The Holiday. There were a few scenes that were generally good, otherwise I was rolling my eyes at every “deep” character and wanting the movie to end.

Jonah Hex

I don’t understand why this movie gets so many horrible reviews. My PSI for this movie was a 33 and I don’t agree with that at all. I thought that this was a fun comic book turned into a western movie. I thought that Brolin was a really good Hex, Fox was what her name implies a total fox and Fassbender was an awesome badass Irish terrorist. Oh and don’t forget Malkovich as the other terrorist with the worst hair ever in a movie. Everyone played their parts well and it created some entertainment.

Shame

American Psycho with less murdering and more sex. I didn’t mind this film, I thought it was directed well and the acting was amazing from both Fassbender and Mulligan. The movie isn’t incredibly long though and yet it just creeps along ever so slowly. There are not any great twists or plot developments it’s just a day in the life of a sex addict. I wish we would have seen a bit of background character development for Fassbender to know why he was so screwed up. Oh well maybe in the sequel.
