Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

An adaptation screw-up of fantastic proportions. I need to just stop watching Wes Anderson films. I walk away seething just about every time. Where people see a whimsical movie, I see a bastardization of a great children’s book. Roald Dahl would put Anderson in the Chokey for this one. I just read the book yesterday and watched this movie for the first time. The scenes are completely out of order and all these new weird characters are added in for no good reason. The book was great, why add your crappy characters Wessy? I may have to just have a personal rule to not watch anymore Wes Anderson films, even if it means I don’t ever finish a top 100 list from a certain year. I’m giving ten points for great animation visuals… but -90 for directing, writing and voice acting. I feel like I need a bath.

The Deer Hunter (1978)

Normally you’d have to put a gun to my head to watch a 3 hour long Vietnam War movie, but this was pretty good. I would say my biggest problem with the film was the extremely lengthy Wedding scene at the beginning. I didn’t time it, but it felt like it was almost 40 minutes long and it was a lot of shouting, yelling and cheering with bad sound quality so all the lines were pretty much getting lost. Once it got to the war parts the movie gets a lot better. There are a lot of really hard scenes to watch but the acting coming from De Niro and Walken is top notch. It was also interesting seeing Meryl Streep so young in this movie, she was pretty adorable and put on a good performance. I don’t know if I’ll ever watch this movie again, but I am glad I saw it once.

The Giver (2014)

It doesn’t take an elder to tell you that the story this movie is based off of is really good. I don’t think the book translates to a movie as well. I was happy with Jeff Bridges and extremely happy with Odeya Rush. She is a new actress to me and I thought she did a great job and was quite beautiful. Meryl Streep was a pretty big name to have in this but she faded into the background and I’ll probably forget that she was even in this, I feel the same way about Katie Holmes. It was strange seeing Taylor Swift in a live-action role. She did an okay job, she did just a small cameo. I loved the use of black and white and color. It reminded me of Pleasantville. A good movie but ultimately forgettable and you don’t need any special injections to forget it either.

Into the Woods (2014)

I wouldn’t want to get lost in these woods forever, but it was a fun little stroll towards Grandma’s house. This movie had some really catchy tunes, due to it being a popular musical. The cast was pretty great with the standouts being Johnny Depp as the Wolf, Lilla Crawford as Red Riding Hood and Emily Blunt as the Baker’s Wife. I also really enjoyed Chris Pine as the Prince; he’s good at playing someone really pompous. There was some good humor and nice costumes and sets, but one complaint I have about this film is about 2/3 through the movie it feels like it ends and the credits should roll, until you find out there is another third of the movie left, and that last third isn’t very good. Glad to see more musicals being made into films, but I hope they can be pieced together better.

August: Osage County (2013)

Not many people were acting very Sagely in this comedic drama. Yes, this film has an all-star cast, I was especially surprised to see Benedict Cumberbatch in this film. Unfortunately it seems like all these big stars all started trying to outdo each other and it ends up feeling messy and annoying. The ending of the film is absolutely brutal and makes me miss a Coen Brothers ending. There are a few stellar scenes mainly from Chris Cooper and also when the housekeeper wields a deadly shovel.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence

A strange combination of Drama and Science Fiction that mirrors the story of Pinocchio. There are a lot of strange cameos, my favorite being Meryl Streep doing the voice of the Blue Fairy. Jude Law was especially good in this as Joe the Gigolo. It’s a really long movie and takes a really strange turn at the end, but it is mostly enjoyable. The one thing that this movie teaches is that humans better not create real living A.I. because we’ll treat them worse than we treat each other now.

Hope Springs

I love this movie! I laughed and cried. I cheered characters on. I just thought it was wonderful. Streep and Tommy Lee Jones were an excellent couple together and both did a fantastic acting job. I thought the writing was done really well and felt like something that could happen for real in any relationship. I think this movie should be required viewing for any young couple getting ready for marriage. This is one my 2012’s finest movies so far. Just fantastic!
