Run All Night (2015)

Also known as “Taken 17”. Yes, Liam Neeson is back as the guy with a particular set of skills and despite the actor’s hatred toward firearms he sure seemed to enjoy using them throughout the film. The movie is good, it has a lot of good action scenes in it, but honestly I think Neeson has poisoned the well with me. He’s too political and his movies are all the same (even though the formula works and probably makes money). Ed Harris was an awesome villain and honestly at times, I wanted him to succeed in his efforts. I’ll probably confuse this one for a Taken film in the future, so at least I’ll have this review as a reference to remind myself that it was a little different.

The Abyss (1989)

I’m glad the abyss didn’t stare back as I was staring at it. This movie is worth staring at as it has some really good special effects for the late 80’s. I really like this film especially with Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio leading the cast. The underwater scenes are so surreal and as people start acting crazier the movie’s tension factor rises faster than the sea at high tide. I do think the ending was a little weird and underwhelming, Cameron goes for a very anti-war/nukes message that seems forced into an interesting sci-fi story line about the mysteries of our oceans. Get comfortable if you are watching this as it has almost a three hour run-time. It won’t seem that long as you’ll be swept away by the fast moving current of its story.

The Rock (1996)

A film with more action than Sean Connery’s birthday, this Michael Bay movie is actually pretty good. It has a lot of cool stuff like Ed Harris as a bad guy. Sean Connery as a semi-dubious bad guy and Nicolas Cage as the goofy good guy who knows his chemicals. Cage’s performance like most of them is hilarious due to his overly expressive face. Connery looke really cool with his long hair, and that thing he does to the two-way mirror with a quarter is pretty awesome. The action is over-the-top but hey, it’s Michael Bay… deal with it! It starts to drag somewhere toward the middle but finishes pretty strong. It’s an extremely lengthy action-film, but just enjoy the pretty fireworks that Bay provides.

Apollo 13 (1995)

Houston, we have very few problems with this film. It isn’t always full of action but when the space dust hits the fan it gets really good. I love all the actors in it Hanks, Sinise, Harris and Bacon. Also, my favorite actor Bill Paxton does a very fine job. The movie starts off very slow, and builds to a nice crescendo leaving your breathless (along with the astronauts) in the end. There’s some good humor and scary moments too. The way the film shot is gorgeous with the view of the moon and Earth. Basically, it’s like the movie Gravity but a thousand times better.

The Truman Show (1998)

A show that shouldn’t be cancelled. Jim Carrey has one of these rare roles that are really good for him. Low physical comedy with an interesting plot and a lot of heart. Ed Harris is an excellent overseer with his control over every aspect of Truman’s life. I like the “reality tv” aspect of the film, from life to adulthood. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is actually done someday, since people like to waste their lives watching ordinary people do regular things. Very well done and fun movie. See it.

Sweetwater (2013)

For such a sweet title the movie has a sour view toward poor Sarah in this bizarre Western tale. January Jones stars as a poor woman who has to scrape by on her dirt farm in the middle of nowhere. All the while an evil preacher is making her life a living hell. I couldn’t tell if this was supposed to be serious or comedic. At times I felt like I should laugh… I didn’t because I’m not a terrible person. The movie is just so murky that you can’t tell if it’s a drama, thriller, comedy or western. It’s just depressing. Ed Harris is pretty awesome.

Game Change

An HBO movie tackling the subject of Gov. Sarah Palin. I must say that they did a pretty good job not being too offensive, considering I am a pretty strong conservative. I’ll give props to Julianne Moore. I would have never thought to cast her as a Sarah Palin over like Tina Fey but she took the role and gave it legitimacy that Fey would have screwed up. I also thought Ed Harris was an amazing McCain and really filled that role perfectly. The movie was dry at times and Lord knows I hate the end.
