Mistress America (2015)

Finally Noah Baumbach a movie that is watchable! Yes, it’s still not perfect, but I did enjoy this movie. Greta Gerwig was adorable as ever and I really enjoyed Lola Kirke’s performance. The rest of the supporting cast was also good in its own way. Still, the Baumbach curse remains… he still can’t make a movie that isn’t just another “day in the life” kind of film. I really hate that genre of films. It’s like the reality TV form of movies. The writing is good though with a frenetic pace that will leave you breathless. I also laughed at several scenes, so good job on the comedy bits. Hopefully this is an upward trend for a writer/director I’ve come to love to hate.

A Reason to Believe (1995)

This movie may sound like a Christmas film with its title but it’s actually about campus date-rape. Yes, the film does delve into feminist theory but it does a pretty good job of showing both sides of the issue on this touchy subject. I mainly watched this movie for Holly Marie Combs from Charmed (she’s one of my favorites) but I really did like Allison Smith from the West Wing as the lead character. The main frat guys are incredibly unlikable and you’ll find yourself getting pretty mad at several of the characters in this film. Some of the acting is spotty and it does reek of 90’s-ness (bad baggy clothing and all). It does have a good moral and it keeps you watching as you aren’t sure whether people are going to believe the main character or not.

Animal House (1978)

There’s no double secret rule that you have to like this movie, but you probably will. I feel like most college party movies or teen movies like American Pie, look to this movie for inspiration. The boys of Delta house crack me up with their antics, they throw great parties and just know how to have a good time. Some notable scenes are the terrible prank they pull to pick up girls at the Girl’s academy by pretending to be engaged to a girl who had died in a kiln accident, the Homecoming Parade scene and the scene with shooting the horse in the Dean’s office. This movie makes me miss John Belushi and his crazy eyebrows and I have to give props to Donald Sutherland being the creepiest college professor ever. This film may not be the perfect comedy, but it’s one of the most important ones. This film is best watched while wearing a toga.

Berkeley (2005)

You don’t have to go to a fancy college to understand that this movie has nothing new to offer the film world. Berkeley follows just about every Vietnam-era, anti-war film. Boy goes to college, boy becomes Marxist, boy protests, boy gets in over his head… then boy gets hippy girl. Nothing new here, move on. It’s honestly hard to find anything good about this movie. The main character was annoying and Nick Roth who played this character, really brought nothing to the role. At least Laura Jordan and Sarah Carter were cute hippy chicks. Henry Winkler, you can do much better than this. Stay away from dumb projects like this film. Avoid this like the draft.

At Middleton (2013)

This should be called Parents Gone Wild. Two parents, Vera Farmiga and Andy Garcia, take their kids to a campus tour at Middleton. The two play hooky and end up having a whirlwind romance. The only problem is, they are both still married. The romance plot didn’t work, I really didn’t like how flippant the two were about their own marriages. I did like that Vera Farmiga played the mother of her youngest sister Taissa Farmiga. Otherwise, it was watching kids being responsible while parents smoked weed. No thanks.
