Blackhat (2015)

This movie at times made me black out. It was just so choppy, it was hard to follow. I also just can’t see beefcake Chris Hemsworth as this awesome computer geek hacker. It just didn’t make any sense. I thought Wei Tang was not only beautiful, but an excellent actress throughout this film. I’m not exactly sure why Viola Davis was in this, she seems like she should be in better movies than this. I like movies about computers and hacking (even the movie the Net!) but this one didn’t really hold my attention. It just felt like waiting for a dial-up modem to connect. Loud noises and all.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

I don’t know exactly what the big deal is, this is a much talked about and loved movie but now that I’ve finally watched it… I wasn’t blown away. It was a good movie, just not an instant classic. I do like the mix of supernatural and 80’s action. Kurt Russell is pretty funny in this as is Kim Cattrall. Mainly I liked the make-up, special effects and costuming. Everyone looked really weird and there were some strange effects like a floating eyeball monster and some epic almost anime-like sword fights in mid-air. John Carpenter went pretty weird on this film, I can see why some people love it, maybe I would have liked it better if I would have saw it when I was younger.

Mulan (1998)

After reflecting on this film, I’m ready to get down to business on the review. Mulan is one of Disney’s best, last hand drawn animations. Watching this made me miss those kind of films. I guess Princess and the Frog is pretty great, but I would trade all the CGI Disney/Pixar films for a few more of these classics like Mulan, Hercules and Aladdin. Mulan is especially cool because the lead female isn’t a Princess, nor does she act like one. The story is interesting and exciting with fantastic music. You’ll be humming these songs for days to come. I didn’t love Eddie Murphy as Mushu but he didn’t ruin the film either. Mulan is one of my favorite Disney heroes and I would say that I could watch this over and over and not tire of it. Excellent Disney film, check this one out if you haven’t. I waited 9 years too long to see this the first time and I regretted it.

The Flowers of War

This is a great movie. Christian Bale goes from being a goofy good-for-nothing Mortician to the protector of a group of young Chinese Catholic school children during the invasion of Nanking in 1937. Flowers of War contains some of the most brutal war violence that I have seen since Saving Private Ryan and has other really mortifying scenes. The Japanese are brutal to the Chinese people and you can’t help but feel terrible about the women and children who are affected. A sad but wonderful film.
