In the Heart of the Sea (2015)

A tale of a whale. This actually was a lot cooler than I was expecting. I was thinking this was just a Moby Dick movie, but it’s actually about the author of Moby Dick getting the details about a giant whale attack for his story. I love that kind of framing device, just like Finding Neverland wasn’t exactly just a Peter Pan movie. Brendan Gleeson, Cillian Murphy were really good. Chris Hemsworth was a great leading man. I love the whale in the film too, it has an interesting behavior to it that made the film seem fresh. I just thought the whole thing was surprising and really good.

Gangs of New York

This movie is awesome. Scorsese did a fantastic job with this one. DiCaprio and Day-Lewis are amazing opposite of each other. Scorsese even makes Cameron Diaz look great in this, although I’ll attribute that to her red hair. The scenes are violent and gritty and the humor is fantastic. Nothing shows off America better than the scene on Election Day. There are some other great cameos by John C. Reilly and Brendan Gleeson and Liam Neeson. New York never seemed scarier than during this time period.

The Guard

Don Cheadle and Brendan Gleeson were great in this cop comedy. I really liked this film even though some of the accents were really strong in it and I had to really pay attention to what everyone was saying. Gleeson shined in this movie, I had not seen him in anything but Harry Potter so it was nice to see him without that weird “Mad” eye. I laughed really hard on several parts and just really had a good time. There are some great lines in this. Oh and this movie hates Dublin.
