Doctor Strange (2016)

I haven’t watched or reviewed a movie in a while… and it felt strange. I thought I would try and get back on the horse and do a fun Marvel movie. I did really like this one. It has a good mix of humor and dead seriousness. I feel like I had a small working knowledge of the characters of this film, from a few Marvel video games that I’ve tried. So it helped to know some story and names beforehand. Benedict Cumberbatch is wonderful as usual and he looks awesome as a super hero. The supporting cast of Ejiofor, Swinton, McAdams and Mikkelsen made this a very watchable film. I’ve been feeling burnt out from the endless hero movies, but I did like this one. Magic is always fun. I’ll look forward to the next 10 sequels for this series. I would recommend you see this if you like a strong male lead and some really interesting special effects that are on par with Inception.

Zoolander 2 (2016)

Twolander isn’t as bad as everyone advertises, but fashion modeling is very objective I would think Tyra Banks would say. Yeah, this movie isn’t perfect, but I remember laughing quite a bit throughout the film. Maybe I was laughing at the sheer stupidity, but still it has some good parts. I would say the parts with Kiefer Sutherland were the best and I will always love everything Justin Theroux does. Cruz was really hot in this film and Ferrell had some funny parts too. I do think the main two protagonists (Stiller and Wilson) were the weakest parts of the film. I also didn’t like the inclusion of Zoolander’s son. He was a pretty bad actor. The surprise of Benedict Cumberbatch is as funny as it is frightening.

The Imitation Game (2014)

This was no game. The film was about beating the Nazi’s Enigma code in World War II. I thought the film had some exciting moments and then again it trudged into some of Turings personal life problems which didn’t feel necessary for the general plot of the film. It felt thrown in there to make some sort of societal point. Other than that one problem with the film, I found it to be quite fascinating. Benedict Cumberbatch had a great performance even though he was basically being Sherlock again and the supporting cast also did a great job. So far this is the second best Oscar nominated film I’ve seen this season, just behind American Sniper.

August: Osage County (2013)

Not many people were acting very Sagely in this comedic drama. Yes, this film has an all-star cast, I was especially surprised to see Benedict Cumberbatch in this film. Unfortunately it seems like all these big stars all started trying to outdo each other and it ends up feeling messy and annoying. The ending of the film is absolutely brutal and makes me miss a Coen Brothers ending. There are a few stellar scenes mainly from Chris Cooper and also when the housekeeper wields a deadly shovel.

Star Trek Into Darkness

It could have just been called Star Trek: Benedict Cumberbatch and I would have seen it a lot sooner. Wow, what a pulse pounding and awesome film. Great one liners and has quite possibly the best bad guy since the Wrath of Khan. Everything was so intense even from the very beginning. I also thought that some nods to the older movies made this film great. I hope to see more J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies, they are without a doubt a total blast to watch. Simon Pegg was also, once again, great.

Four Lions

Probably the best movie about terrorism that I’ve seen. This movie tackles the scary idea of Jihad and pokes fun at it. Not only teaching the audience about it but just making it easy to understand and funny. My favorite part was when a character says “He martyred himself by tripping over a sheep”. I laughed so hard at that scene I cried. My biggest complaint about this is the accents and slang of the Brits (use subtitles). Benedict Cumberbatch was my favorite cameo in the film. So much fun.
