Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

There wasn’t much motion in this picture. This is one of the hardest Star Trek’s to get through, and I’m counting the TV series too along with the movies. I have a lot of problems with this film. I didn’t love the costumes, it has a terrible bad guy (although admittedly a great twist) and the slowest meandering scenes you can think of. The worst of the worst is the almost half-hour sequence where the Enterprise goes through this blue-cloud of a force field while there is almost no dialogue. Drink a lot of coffee before watching that scene or you might space out, pun intended. It was nice to see the crew all together again. I liked the addition of Decker and Ilia. DeForest Kelley as “Bones” always slays me with his dry wit. It’s just a shame they spent so much time showing slow-mo scenes of the Enterprise leaving dock and people in space suits floating around, I know they were proud of the special effects but the length it went on almost ruined the movie. You won’t miss much if you just start with the Wrath of Khan. Because I Khan’t stand this first movie.
