Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Stanley Kubrick was born to direct. I love this movie, long time. Sure, it does have some really almost heartbreaking moments and some parts that are downright hard to watch. But then again, there are parts of great levity and laughter too. It’s hard to say there is humor to be found in the Vietnam war, but Kubrick found many ways to make me smile in this film. Matthew Modine as “Joker” was one of my favorite characters, he was a complicated fellow, both serious and a jokester. R. Lee Ermey was fantastic as the Drill Sergeant with some of the most quotable lines ever. Vincent D’Onofrio has one of the most haunting scenes in film as Pvt. Gomer Pyle, the dead eyes that he has in his final scene are disturbing to say the least. I’m not a huge war film fan, as I’ve mentioned before, but this movie is incredible.
