American Beauty (1999)

There’s nothing more American than a midlife crisis and that’s what Kevin Spacey brings us full-on in this excellent drama. This is one of those films that gets better every time you watch it. You laugh at everyone’s trials and also feel very sorry for them. The writing is absolutely amazing from Alan Ball. The directing is also very good from Sam Mendes. This is one of my favorite movies and it will remain that way. I think the best thing that this movie brings is character development. Almost every character majorly changes by the end of the film. They go on a journey and grow or they head the opposite way and revert to their younger days. Excellent, excellent movie.

  1. I haven’t seen this film in almost ten years, but the cinematography is simply amazing. In addition to the plot and the characters, it’s a gorgeous film to watch, even in its darker moments.

Oh, there is perhaps one thing that is more American (or just as American) as the mid life crisis: the road trip.
