Parker (2013)

An action movie left in park. I usually like Jason Statham, despite his utter lack of great one-liners. This was not one of his better movies. There is a distinct lack of action throughout most of the film. Also, when the movie description touts a “Thief with a unique code of professional ethics”, you know you are in for a doozy. What really put the dagger through the films hand is J Lo. Why is she still acting? I think she was supposed to be comic relief but I wasn’t sure. I think she was hired just so they can check if she is wearing wire. Avoid this one.

Upstream Color (2013)

I’ll never look at bacon the same again. Upstream Color is not going to be a movie for everybody. If you enjoy a surreal experience and very nice sound effects (which really remind me of David Lynch’s films), you will likely enjoy this movie too. There are a couple longer-ish dry spells that are confusing and that hurt the score of this film for me. The parts that you start to piece together are quite nefarious and awesomely Sci-Fi. Like I said if you like normal films, stay away. If weird is your flavor… pass the bacon.

A Case of You (2013)

Facebook Stalking: Tape 1. This movie is kind of cute if you can look past the fact that Justin Long Facebook stalks Evan Rachel Wood, learns everything she likes and then wows her into a relationship based on a fake persona he created from her likes. A pretty typical Romantic Comedy, except it doesn’t exactly follow the normal path that those movies take. There are some good cameos with Vince Vaughn and Peter Dinklage. Justin Long is pretty wimpy/creepy. Everyone else is pretty likable. A strange but ok Romance.

Nebraska (2013)

The good life… and a fine movie. Nebraska is an ok movie. It didn’t blow me away. It honestly felt a lot like David Lynch’s movie “The Straight Story” but not as good. Plus, Lynch got away with a G rating and not an R rating like this movie had. Alexander Payne has still yet to impress me. I guess I just don’t have the same type of humor as him. Even though, I am a native Nebraskan, I’m not instantly on board with his directing. Good acting from Dern though and June Squibb was pretty darn funny.

Thor: The Dark World (2013)

These are dark times indeed. Thor wasn’t as good this time around. He’s one of my favorites from the Avengers. I thought the movie felt really long. It wasn’t exactly a long movie, it just had a lot of superfluous scenes. I also don’t love Natalie Portman’s character. She talks really smart but her acting doesn’t really back it up. I did think that Tom Hiddleston as Loki really stole the show. He had the best humor and is a very likable bad guy. You could probably skip this and not miss much.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)

This one didn’t get as much of a rise out of me that the last film did. The action scenes were pretty intense, especially some of the chase scenes. The bad female Terminator the T-X wasn’t nearly as cool as the T-1000. Sure, she has liquid metal and she was pretty beautiful. She just didn’t instill the dread that the T-1000 brought to the table. Arnold seemed a lot older (because he was) and I like Nick Stahl, just not as John Connor. I did enjoy Claire Danes, she was a good addition to the cast.

Europa Report (2013)

The movie never fully roped me in even though I’m very interested and fond of space exploration. The premise of the movie is good. A private company funds an expedition to Jupiter’s fourth moon to seek out the existence of life. The camera work is set up like a found-footage horror film like Paranormal Activity. I don’t know why they did it though. It just hurt the film. I never really got to know the characters so I didn’t feel bad as some were dispatched. It’s all rather bland most of the time.
