Evil Dead (2013)

The makers of this film were pretty evil. They took one of my beloved movie franchises and twisted it into some sick stuff. Sure, I found the special effects to be quite well done but, man, this movie was gruesome. I did like some of the little references to the original, but I’ll have to admit they really didn’t add anything new. I even saw the twist coming a mile away. There was some good acting but I hated the male lead. I was hoping Ash would come out of nowhere and chainsaw him down for being such a weenie.

Don Jon (2013)

Don Jon was an interesting one. Written, directed and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt in this film, that I guess revolves around porn addiction, was intriguing. I couldn’t exactly pinpoint what the film was aiming at… perhaps it is how women can change you like Scarlett Johansson, forcefully molding a service industry guy into a college grad or the sad Julianne Moore teaching him to find love in a persons eyes and not through a LCD computer screen. Regardless of the point, I liked the film. Good job J. G-L.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013)

The outlook for this film seemed cloudy at first, but then it ends in a spectacular fashion. Cloudy 2 or Meatballs 2 whichever you decide to call it, was a pretty fun movie. It has a pretty slow start and I didn’t fully enjoy it until about the last third of the movie. All the voice actors who returned from the original were great. I thought Terry Crews did a good job. There definitely was less heart and more living fruit in this film, but I wouldn’t say it was bad… just when comparing it to the original it lacks something.

Rush (2013)

I should have rushed out to see this one. Normally I couldn’t care about cars driving around in circles but when it comes to the high-octane rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt in Formula 1 racing I can get on board. Both Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl were great. Bruhl was especially great because you could hate him at one point of the film and love him the next. The drama was excellent and the direction done by Ron Howard was superb. If you like sports movies this one is worth a look.

Bad Grandpa (2013)

Oh sonny you are in for a treat and I don’t mean Worther’s Originals. This is the first movie from the J.A. crew that I have truly enjoyed. I mainly liked this because it was a full length movie based on my favorite scene from the first J.A. movie. Knoxville isn’t always hilarious in this but when he is he had me rolling on the floor. Jackson Nicoll was also great as the Grandson. The scene at the beauty pageant is worth seeing this film alone. Has kind of a sadistic but sweet ending. A lot of fun.

Finding Nemo (2003)

Search no longer this film is a classic. Sure, it did get a lot of hype. It also disappointed me greatly that it wasn’t a musical like some of my Disney favorite but the story of the father searching desperately for his son was a touching one. I loved all the characters except I have a love/hate relationship with Ellen’s character Dory. Sometimes she was funny and sometimes she got on my nerves. The Sharks and Turtles were my favorite characters along with the fish tank crew. A really fun kids movie.

In a World… (2013)

In a world where short reviews are written. One man… has the power. To score. This. Film. What does this man have to say about this movie? Well, it’s not too bad. In fact I thought it was pretty fun. Written, directed and starring Lake Bell, this film about Hollywood’s voice-over industry has some good laughs. Bell is very likable. The movie has a few down moments that will probably lose you, but then it will pull you back in. Never have I paid so much attention to how actors speak until I saw this one.
