Once Bitten (1985)

It would be too easy to say that this movie bites. Plus, it wouldn’t be accurate. I actually found this movie mildly enjoyable. It’s no Teen Wolf but it has some fun moments. The dance-off between the Countess and Jim Carrey’s girlfriend is quite funny. The shower scene where Carrey’s two male friends have to look for the vampire bite was also hilarious. There were a lot of cliche 80’s scenes and some pretty bad music. This will never be a classic but it’s not a horrible way to spend a night.

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

Chapter 2 of the sound mixer’s guide: Match the old lady’s voice to the beautiful young girl at the beginning. Yes, I noticed. I noticed it a lot more because I knew that girl from my theater classes. The wonderful Lindsay Seim. I was so excited to see my friend but was shocked to hear her with a granny voice. That sound dubbing wasn’t the only thing wrong though. The movie was slow compared to the original and was sometimes hard to follow. Still, it has some creepy moments. I’m also glad to see a friend get acting work!

Elysium

A future that is bleak with a desolate and thinly veiled political storyline. I’m getting a little tired of this tactic of starting an entire opening scene in another language. It fools me into thinking I bumped the remote and changed the language setting. Also, the accents (while varied) really hurt my understanding of a good 1/3 of the lines. The legalize now point beats you over the head. The most redeemable part of the film is the excellent use of tech and CGI for some epic sci-fi scenes.

The Polar Express (2004)

Express train to a fun time with a dash of Holiday creepiness and cheer! Overall, I would say that this movie is really good. It has some really good action scenes and is pretty touching with a nice ending. One thing that you can’t ignore is how creepy some of the kids are. The main boy in the film is mostly fine but the girl and the younger boy both seem like creepy killer robots. Tom Hanks was brilliant and so was his animation. I loved how he did multiple voices like a parent reading all the parts in a book.

The Terminator (1984)

He’ll be back in a much better movie. I will be forever glad that this movie was made. Still, it hasn’t aged very well and is pretty dorky at times. Bill Paxton was a welcome addition to the cast. Some of the special effects were amazing and some were laughable. Arnold was a great and formidable foe. Michael Biehn was a pretty dashing hero. I love the design of the metallic Terminator. It’s very iconic. The movie isn’t perfect but it sets up a sequel that is. Still, you should watch this.

Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

Vote for Jared and Jerusha Hess! The writers of this film. This movie really isn’t about anything. It may also be one of the most quotable movies of the early 2000’s. I do love a lot of the good one-liners and some of the situations in the film are really funny. Once you’ve seen this many times though it loses its luster. This was a lot more funny the first time I watched it when I was younger. Still, it made me smile a lot. The love story of Kip and Lafawnduh will always be near and dear to me.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)

Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge! Remember the five D’s of dodgeball! This movie gets a bad rap but I love it! A lot of comedies don’t make me laugh but this one has me in stitches. Rip Torn is hilarious. Alan Tudyk is an awesome pirate. Christine Taylor is beautiful and deadly with a red rubber ball. The Vaughn and Stiller match-up is great. There are some dumb parts in this but the good parts fully make up for that. Jason Bateman steals the show as the commentator, holy cow he makes me laugh.
